City modifies zoo hours in light of COVID-19 staffing constraints

Due to staffing issues related to COVID-19 quarantines, the City of Independence will implement a temporarily modified schedule for Ralph Mitchell Zoo, beginning Sunday. The zoo’s temporary schedule is as follows:

  • Closed Sunday and Monday, December 6 and 7
  • Tuesday-Saturday, December 8-12, open 12 noon to 5 p.m.
  • Closed Sunday and Monday, December 13 and 14
  • Beginning Tuesday, December 15, open normal hours 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“We are currently operating at about half staff in the zoo, due to several staff members being in quarantine,” explained City Manager Kelly Passauer. “In order to maintain some open hours and ensure adequate staffing for animal care, a modified schedule is necessary for approximately one week. We appreciate the public’s understanding as we continue to make adjustments to ensure the safety of our staff and citizens.”
