Community spring clean-up set for April 24-30
The City of Independence, its Community Beautification Committee and the Independence Chamber of Commerce are teaming up to champion spring cleaning activities around town later this month.
Residents are encouraged to join the effort April 24-30, as the City will offer several free and expanded services to assist with clean-up activities, including:
- Residential dumpsters will be offered free of charge for one-day use on a first-come, first-served basis. Residents may reserve an eight-yard dumpster by calling (620) 877-4553.
- The City Sanitation Yard, 21st & Maple, will be open and staffed daily during clean-up week from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. to allow for disposal of large waste and bulky items. No hazardous waste will be accepted.
- The City Brush Dump, located one-half mile south of College Avenue on County Road 4100, will be open to the public daily 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for disposal of leaves and limbs. No lumber accepted.
Additionally, Saturday, April 30, will be observed as the sixth annual LOVE Independence day, designated as a purposeful day for residents and businesses to perform random acts of kindness in the community. Residents are invited to join a volunteer group at Riverside Park at 9 a.m. that morning for the first weekly clean-up walk to help beautify the community. Additional clean-up walks, scheduled for approximately one hour, will be conducted each Saturday through September as follows:
- May 7, Ralph Mitchell Zoo
- May 14, Downtown Independence
- May 21, Park Blvd. Ballfields
- May 28, South 10th Street Park
Weekly walks will begin at 9 a.m., and residents are encouraged to bring a trash bag and join on any or all Saturdays. No RSVP is necessary.
