A fur coat isn't enough to protect your pets from dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills! Make sure your pets have appropriate shelter from the cold and access to food and unfrozen drinking water.

We recommend you stay inside, too, but if you have an urgent need to dump your trash, the City Sanitation Yard at 21st & Maple will be open to the public Thursday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Weather permitting, commercial sanitation routes will resume Saturday. Next week, the Christmas holiday will be observed on Monday, and all sanitation services will be shifted by one day, with services resuming Tuesday, December 27, and running Monday routes.

TODAY IS OFFICIALLY THE FIRST DAY OF WINTER, and it's coming in hot...and by hot we mean REALLY, REALLY COLD! Please take precautions and prepare your homes, vehicles and pets for the wintry blast expected to hit by tomorrow morning. If you or someone you care about does not have adequate shelter from the cold, please call the non-emergency police line, 620-332-1700, and we will help.

The National Weather Service has forecast a blast of wintry weather in Southeast Kansas this week, including drastically cold temperatures, strong winds and snow. Temperatures on Thursday and Friday are expected to range from single digits to below freezing, and 1 to 4 inches of snow and winds in excess of 30 miles per hour are expected Thursday morning.
City of Independence personnel are monitoring the situation and making preparations to help keep citizens safe. Following are important announcements regarding weather safety and changes to City service schedules:
Safety Considerations:
• When snowfall and strong winds combine, slick roadways, drifting snow and “whiteout” conditions are possible. Residents are encouraged to stay home, drive only when necessary and use extreme caution. City crews will be unable to work in dangerously cold temperatures, so streets may become treacherous or impassable at times.
• In anticipation of the weather, residents should be sure their homes are stocked with groceries and needed medications.
• Pets should be brought indoors or provided sufficient shelter from below-freezing temperatures and wintry precipitation.
• Residents should take care to avoid freezing water pipes by allowing water to trickle from faucets during extremely low temperatures.
• It’s NEVER a good idea to start a fire indoors outside of a fireplace or use open-flame space heaters or cooking appliances to heat your home. If you or someone you know does not have appropriate shelter or requires assistance, please contact the Independence Police Department via its non-emergency line, 620-332-1700.
Closures and Schedule Changes:
• Riverside Park and Ralph Mitchell Zoo will be closed Thursday and Friday.
• For the safety of the sanitation crews, trash pickup services will be cancelled on Thursday and Friday. However, the City Sanitation Yard at 21st & Maple will be open both days from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Residents are welcome to drop off trash during those hours if necessary.
• Commercial sanitation pickup routes will resume on Saturday, weather permitting.
• Next week, the Christmas holiday will be observed on Monday, and all sanitation services will be shifted by one day, with services resuming Tuesday, December 27, and running Monday routes.
