City Commission The City of Independence is a City Manager type of government. The City Manager is appointed by the Governing Body. The Governing Body is made up of the Mayor, Tim White and two Commissioners; Derrill Unruh and Rick Mott.

Historic Preservation/Certified Local Government This board is responsible for serving as a Certified Local Government (CLG), issues Certificates of Appropriateness and makes recommendations regarding changes or modifications to historic structures or structures within the environs of historic structures.

Housing Authority The Housing Authority is responsible for administering the Housing Authority Budget. They are also responsible for the following Housing Authority Programs; TBRA (Tenant Based Rental Assistance) and Housing Rehabilitation (if grant funds are available). They also manage Penn Terrace and various other rental properties. The Housing Authority and the City are currently in the process of constructing homes for income qualified families.

Library Board of Trustees The Independence Library District Board of Trustees are responsible for the library budget, library operations and library programs.

Park Board The Park Board is responsible for park planning and development, working with the Recreation Commission on the Park and Recreation Plan, recommending the annual park improvements and reviewing park policies.

Planning Commission/Board of Zoning Appeals The Planning Commission is responsible for making recommendations to the City Commission rgarding rezoning, conditional use permits and platting. The Board of Zoning Appeals is responsible for considering variances. Resources utilized by these boards include the Comprehensive Plan and the Zoning Ordinance.

Recreation Commission The Recreation Commission is responsible for administering the Recreation Commission budget, approving Recreation Commission programs and planning for future recreational needs. The Recreation Commission also manages the Ash Youth Center, Aquatic Center and all City owned sports complexes.
