The Independence Police Department is dedicated to providing the citizens of Independence with professional, progressive law enforcement. Our goal is to train our staff to provide these services in a manner that reflects the proficiency which is incumbent of today’s law enforcement agencies. We serve the citizens of our city and provide assistance to other jurisdictions when a request is made from a representative official from that area. Our agency also provides extensive training to other agencies throughout the region. By providing this training we are able to assist multiple agencies, with emphasis placed on smaller agencies that may otherwise be unable to provide training resources for their officers. This has a cyclical effect that benefits all citizens within the region. We currently have (22) full time sworn officer positions allocated to our department and hope to add two additional positions in 2009. Our department also maintains our own (24) hour dispatch center and we are a primary safety answering point that receives and dispatches emergency 911 services to nearly (65%) of the citizens of Montgomery County with an average of 15,000 calls per year. Our agency provides specialized services by maintaining a SWAT unit, narcotics unit, animal control and K-9 unit. These specialized units further assist us in our goal of providing the finest possible law enforcement services available. The Police Department is also in charge of animal control for the City.
