Regular grave spaces are $350.  There are additional charges for opening and closing. Refer to question 2 for details.

Baby mound space w/opening and closing is $250.00.

 All grave spaces can be paid for at the City Clerk’s office at 120 N. 6th, Independence, KS 67301.

Chapter 22. Cemeteries (updated 2023)

(1) Opening and closing graves, including pre-needs.

a. Opening and closing, adult, weekdays. .....$350.00

Additional charge, per hour, or fraction thereof, for any opening and closing work done after 4:00 p.m. .....$100.00

b. Opening and closing, adult, Saturdays. .....$600.00

c. Opening and closing, adult, Sundays and holidays. .....$1,500.00

Additional charge, per hour, or fraction thereof, for any opening and closing after 12:00 p.m. This charge will be in effect from 12:00 p.m. until the closing is complete, regardless of the starting time of the funeral. .....$100.00

d. Opening and closing, infant, weekdays. .....$250.00

Additional charge, per hour, or fraction thereof, for any opening and closing work done after 4:00 p.m. .....$100.00

e. Opening and closing, infant, Saturdays. .....$350.00

f. Opening and closing, infant,, Sundays and Holidays. .....$400.00

All cemetery decorations need to be removed by 3:30 p.m. ten days after Memorial Day. 

Cemetery employees will begin removing decorations on the eleventh day. As staff and time are limited, we ask that you please adhere to this policy in order for staff to maintain an already tight schedule. Thank you!
