The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a civil rights law that was enacted on July 26, 1990. The ADA guarantees equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities in public accommodations, employment, transportation, State and local government services, and telecommunications. The City of Independence ADA Program ensures that all service, activities and programs offered by the City of Independence are accessible to all people, including those with disabilities.
City of Independence, program, or facility: In accordance with the ADA, the City of Independence established a grievance procedure. If you have a concern or complaint pertaining to a City of Independence service, program or facility, please complete the grievance procedure or contact the ADA Program Office. The Office will investigate and respond within 15 calendar days.
Commercial facility, public accommodations, or business: If you have a concern or complaint pertaining to a private business such as restaurant, retail store, hotel, etc., please go to https://civilrights.justice.gov/report/
After the City was audited by the Department of Justice (DOJ), the City entered into a negotiated Settlement Agreement which sets forth a time-table to achieve ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990) compliance. The agreement requires installation of curb ramps at all intersections throughout the City and making all City buildings and facilities accessible (including recreational facilities).
